Somerset is another county which deserves further exploration, particularely Exmoor which was a favourite holiday destination from my childhood.
For many years I wrote off the Somerset Levels as a bleak, flat landscape at odds with my love of rolling hills, but these days it is a mecca I return to every spring for the high concentration of Hairy Dragonflies and Variable Damselflies. It's also a prime destination late summer for the hawkers.
The abundance of peat-based standing water and brackish waterways provide
large populations of all resident species. Never before or since have I
encountered damselflies in such numbers to provide a living cloud rising
from the reed and grass margins. It's also one of the prime spots to find
the Red-eyed damselfly perched inland for closer observation and better
photo opportunities.
