Studland Heath

Ramsdown Forest and the adjoining area known as Town Common is a large area of heath split by the busy A338 dual carraigeway between Ringwood and Bournemouth. The section alongside the road is a prime spot for Scarce Chaser due to the close proximity of the River Avon.

The heath contains a small rise where the heather is ideal refuge for the Scarce Chaser and many hawkers, including the elusive Brown Hawker. Golden-ringed and Emperor also choose this area as a prime roosting spot, especially during their maturing phase.

Within the heath are several small seasonal ponds which are ideal for observing and photographing Common Emerald, Small Red, Black Darter, Black-tailed Skimmer, Broad-bodied and Four-spotted Chaser, Emperor and even the occasional Moorland (Common) Hawker.

Park at the
recycling area in Hurn.
