Hold Tight
A large and impressive dragonfly (male-74mm, female-84mm) , preferring acidic rivers and streams of all sizes.

Males patrol a predetermined path close to the surface along streams, the length of territory being determined by the number present, decreasing until a state of saturation is reached. They often perch along the bank within a metre of the surface, usually on a favourite twig or stem.

Females oviposit into the gravel substrate with short, sharp stabs, frequently in shade. When spotted by a resident male they usually couple and fly or short distance to a suitable perch where mating takes place over a 30 minute period.

Both sexes can be observed well away from water within heaths, meadows and woodland rides.
